Microplastics - The Hidden Beauty Ingredient

9/10 beauty products contain microplastics that not only raising environmental issues but also skin health issues as well. An explicit research by Plastic Soup Foundation revealed that 9 out of 10 beauty products contain microplastics that we as consumers are using regularly, such as cleansers, facewashes, toners, and moisturizers. Microplastic in skin care is becoming a huge concern that Germany and Korea had to ban its use in cosmetic formulations and Europe is at the edge of banning it to. And if that’s not alarming enough, how about this one - some products contain UP TO 87% of microplastic content only. Yes, that’s true! Paying tons to get plastic filled containers does sound fascinating, no? Well brands do make it sound like that.

Microplastics meaning liquid synthetic polymers that often go unnoticed by naked eyes but play a significant role in deteriorating our health and environment. They are widely used in various beauty products, be it skin care, hair care or even makeup. There are several types of microplastics that are used in beauty products for different reasons. One of the most common reasons being its affordability and availability. They serve as cheap bulking agents and are readily available. Some of the microplastics are used for their exfoliation and binding properties. See, they sound harmless and an extremely crucial part of a skin care’s ingredient list. Isn’t it? The complicated names given to these disastrous ingredients does make them sound so promising, but are they really harmless? A big NO! The use of microplastics raises critical concerns about its impacts on our health and the environment.
