Whenever there is a talk about plastic being present in a beauty product, everybody imagines a plastic container containing the product, And they immediately relate it to plastic accumulation and environmental hazards. Isn’t it? But have you ever wondered what would happen if all the ingredients that we feel charmed by were actually being garnished in molten plastic and sold? Research found that the majority of beauty brands have nearly 87% plastic content in their products. Yes, you heard it right - The hidden beauty ingredient of your favorite product is plastic!
It is like mixing salt in a pot full of gravy! Salt is those charming ingredients that are pictured on the bottle of your favorite moisturizer, and gravy is liquid plastic. Uncomfortable to hear, no? The coat of plastic will only give you temporary pleasure, but as soon as the product gets off, your skin feels even worse - thus the constant need to reapply. - The cycle goes on.
This is the dark side of almost every business, keeping the consumers hooked, even if it costs their lives. Yes, life!
Microplastics, the molten form of synthetic polymers (plastics) can cost your life too and sadly this red flag has been in use since a long time now. These microplastics are used for various reasons, such as:
Holding the ingredients together, diluting the solids or increasing the thickness of liquids, and adding waterproof properties to the product.
Microplastics can cause small to severe health and skin damage, from mere skin irritation to hormone disruption and cancer.
-
Skin Irritation: It is the most common concern that is visible in the initial phases only. Don’t think of it as a sign of “no pain no gain” because it is JUST pain and only pain.
-
Barrier Disruption: Microplastics can penetrate deep inside the skin and can potentially damage natural skin barrier inviting more skin issues.
-
Clogged Pores: We all know how important oxygen is for every living thing. Microplastics can clog skin pores prohibiting it from breathing, hence making the skin dead as no oxygen and nutrient is getting inside except microplastic.
-
Cancer: We are well informed about the harmful effects of plastics and the chemicals present inside such as phthalates and bisphenol A (BPA). Microplastic is no different, entering our body through different pathways! We should be just as cautious of the harm as we are before having to eat or drink in plastic utensil.
- Bioaccumulation: an increasing concern about the bioaccumulation of microplastics and the chemicals that they carry, can potentially accumulate in human tissues, which can have a long term disadvantage which may not be visible at initial phases.
(Point of Concern: Research found that Babies ingest 10 times more microplastics than adults, and fragments of microplastics were found inside the placenta donated after birth)
How can you identify if the product has microplastics inside?
First thing is to look for the “Zero Plastic Inside” sign on the packaging. It is a certificate given to the products that contain 100% microplastic free products inside.
(please note that if one product of some brand has this label doesn’t guarantee the whole range being 100% microplastic free, always check each carton very closely)
Another approach that can help you identify the presence of microplastics is checking if any word in the ingredient list of your product having a salt name starting with “poly” and look for these commonly used microplastics: Phthalates, Parabens, Heavy metals, Cadmium, Lead, Triclosan, Sulfates, Toluene, Synthetic Colors, Talc, PEG, Formaldehyde and Diethanolamine. Make sure it has nothing synthetic.

La Pink which isn’t only India’s first 100% microplastic free beauty brand but has a key ingredient that you will find in every single product, White Haldi. It is especially exported from australia in a concentrated liquid form, known to be 10X more powerful and pure than usual white haldi.
Products are not just packed with any ingredient, a range of 1200 ingredients that are being used are backed by comprehensive research.
Is it really necessary to go completely microplastic free?
Let’s address this question with another question: Are you amazed with korean glass skin? Have you ever been fooled by a product that says “achieve korean glass skin”?
Answer is audible from such a great distance too, it'd definitely be a big YES. But i am sure that the same companies that claim to provide you with Korean glass skin will never tell you that the use of Microplastics in beauty products is banned in South Korea! That explains the Korean beauty revolution, no?
Don’t worry, let’s look at another example, not only the presence of microplastic in face wash is bothersome but common salts (extremely harsh on skin) that are present in bathing soap worth 10 rupees and a face wash costing at least 250-300 rupees, isn’t it difficult to make sense out of this maths? It’s like washing your face with the same soap that you can easily get for 10 rupees but paying around 300 for it to damage your skin. Here at La Pink, the face wash is 100% soap free. You will not feel eye burn even if it accidentally makes its way inside.
The revolution in beauty industry has yet to hit India, it is still going to take atleast 5 more years of research and development for existing beauty brands to reach that stage.
But wait no more, brands like La Pink has got your back!
